When
Elizabeth found herself in need, she knew she had to give.
Elizabeth Johnson has given of herself all throughout her life—to her family, her neighbors, and her church—but in January 2003, she found a new way to give and serve. It was at this time that she was admitted to St. Edward Mercy Medical Center because of numerous health issues. She was experiencing a lot of pain but found that doing crafts was good therapy for her. It gave her something to focus on besides the pain and helped keep her hands working and her mind sharp.
One day, a social worker at St. Edward Mercy took note of the crafts around Elizabeth’s room and told her that this activity would benefit other patients as well. The Rehabilitation Department agreed, and of course, Elizabeth was willing to help. So while Elizabeth was a patient she became a volunteer—helping her fellow patients make unique craft items and adding fun and fellowship to their days.
After being discharged, Elizabeth continued her work with the patients. Over time, though, the trips back and forth became too difficult. That didn’t stop Elizabeth from serving. She found a new way. She began making cards at home and sending them to patients. Today, she sends cards of all types and for all kinds of occasions to St. Edward Mercy patients in need of encouragement. This loving act is most deeply appreciated by Mercy Hospice patients and their families.

“Give, and it will be given to you.
A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be
poured into your lap.”
